Stitching skills, building confidence at Spence Elementary

LA CROSSE, Wis., (November 1, 2024) – Second graders at Spence Elementary School are stitching their way to new skills, thanks to an inspiring project. The project combines art and hands-on learning, introducing students to the basics of sewing as they create their own pillows. Through each stitch, students are crafting unique designs and building essential skills like perseverance and patience.

“Sewing teaches students more than just the mechanics of stitching—it’s about working through challenges,” said art teacher Jamie Guenther. “They’re learning to slow down, be precise, and push through when things get tough.”

The project began with students designing the front of their pillows using contour lines, a foundational art concept they’re exploring. Students then practiced different stitching techniques, like the whip stitch and strip stitch, choosing the one they felt most comfortable with.

Each step in the process is an opportunity for students to master a new skill. They first practiced with large plastic needles and yarn, building their confidence before moving on to smaller needles and thread. The project has sparked genuine excitement among the students.

“They couldn’t wait to start sewing,” added Guenther. “The excitement was incredible, and even though they sometimes get frustrated, it’s rewarding to see them finish and feel proud of what they’ve made.”

For these young students, this sewing project is more than just an art lesson; it’s a hands-on experience in resilience, focus, and creativity.

“It’s a skill that isn’t taught much anymore, but it’s so important,” said Guenther. “I’m thrilled to see them learning something new and meaningful that they’ll take with them.”
