Spence Elementary’s leadership camp shapes future leaders

LA CROSSE, Wis., (September 18, 2024) – Spence Elementary School is proud to host the return of its highly anticipated Fifth-Grade Leadership Camp. This annual event is designed to equip students with essential leadership skills, building confidence and responsibility benefiting them in school and beyond.

The camp provides a full day of activities around leadership qualities such as accountability, problem-solving, and communication. Through engaging sessions that include interactive read-alouds, collaborative group projects, and exciting Breakout EDU challenges, students uncover their leadership potential learning how to apply these skills in real-world situations.

“Our goal is to show students that leadership is about more than being the oldest in school,” said Spence fifth-grade teacher Peter Schmitz. “We want them to understand how their actions can influence others, and by stepping up as role models, they set an example for younger students to follow. Leadership isn’t just a title—it’s a responsibility.”

The camp also addresses behavioral challenges, offering students tools to engage in more effective problem-solving and accountability conversations. These skills will help them navigate not only the classroom but also their relationships at home and in the community, preparing them for a smoother transition to middle school.

Key Highlights of the Day

  • Leadership Talk: The day kicks off with an inspiring leadership talk by Quartell Roberson, Dean of Students at La Crosse Polytechnic School. Roberson shares insights on what it takes to be an impactful leader in both academic and personal settings.
  • Breakout Games & Team-Building: Students engage in hands-on team-building activities, breakout games, and collaborative challenges designed to strengthen their communication and cooperation skills.
