Renowned composer instructs Logan HS and Lincoln MS students

“”The La Crosse Youth Symphony Orchestra (LYSO) is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2017.

A special concert will be held on Sunday, March 19th at 2:00 p.m. at the Viterbo Fine Arts Center. Highlights of the concert include:

● The debut performance of a specially commissioned piece by Robert W. Smith

● Alumni from the past 50 years will of the commissioned piece

● Performance of a piece played at one of the very first LYSO concerts

● Several guest conductors

“The piece by Robert W. Smith will be a once in a lifetime opportunity and experience for our current members and alumni,” said LYSO Artistic Director and Italiano Orchestra Conductor Randall Mastin. “The performance of the piece is the perfect way to showcase the musicianship and talents of the students over the last 50 years.”

Robert W. Smith is one of the most popular and prolific composers today, with over 600 publications in print. Smith held several clinics at La Crosse schools today, including Lincoln Middle School and Logan High School.

“This is an extremely rare opportunity that I want as many of our kids to experience as possible,” said Lincoln Middle School/SOTA II/Coulee Montessori Band Director Jason Harden. “We are very fortunate to have him visit us, compliments of the La Crosse Youth Symphony Orchestra.”

Alumni and the orchestra will be rehearsing the commissioned piece on Saturday, March 18 from Noon-1pm. Smith will conducting.

In 1967, founder Frank Italiano brought together a group of young musicians, creating the youth symphony. Since then, about 5000 students, coaches, conductors and other staff, have been a part of this unique orchestra.
