Northside community celebrates Read Across America Day

Students at Northside Elementary and Coulee Montessori joined millions of their peers across the country while celebrating the annual National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America Day today.

NEA’s Read Across America Day, the nation’s largest celebration of reading, expects more than 45 million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read on Monday. To celebrate the fun and value of reading, Northside Elementary and Coulee Montessori staff invited a diverse group of parents and community members to join them at school and read to students.

“We believe young readers who feel recognized, valued, and represented by the people they read with as well as the books they read, will find more pleasure in reading,” said Northside Elementary and Coulee Montessori principal Laura Huber. “We’re always seeking more adults to help us create a diverse learning experience for all of our students.”

The reading materials selected represented books written by and/or featuring people of color. Guest readers shared stories of their enjoyment of reading and the importance of reading every day. The school’s goal was to showcase their diverse school family and their community’s commitment to literacy while building a joy of reading and a nation of readers.

“We will use books that reflect everyone in the community to help students discover their own voices and learn from the voices of others,” said Huber.

Guest readers joined various classrooms at Northside Elementary and Coulee Montessori throughout the entire school day.
