“”Students and staff at Longfellow Middle School and the La Crosse Design Institute (LDI) got plenty of exercise and did it all for a good cause.
The schools hosted the annual ‘Running for a Reason’ event with a building-wide 5k Run/Walk around the Longfellow Middle School neighborhood followed by a community health expo. Almost 550 students and staff participated in the event.
“This is an opportunity for our Longfellow and LDI communities to join together for a fun, health-focused event and raise funds for an important organization and community partner,” said Longfellow Middle School teacher Marci Kline.
Students and staff organized the event which included fundraising, a t-shirt design contest, the 5k Run/Walk, and a health expo. This year, all funds raised from the event went to support the La Crosse Public Education Foundation (LPEF).
“We have raised just over $800 so far,” said Kline. “That money will be used to help the La Crosse Public Education Foundation fund the support they continue to give the students and staff in our district through their Random Acts of Kindness fund.”
The LPEF’s Random Acts of Kindness Fund helps students overcome roadblocks to achievement by addressing needs in areas such as nutrition, transportation, academic and co-curricular support.
The students researched various local charities and groups and voted on which organization should receive the funds this year. They then raised money by selling student-designed t-shirts and bracelets with the school’s theme this year of “Be the Good”.
After the race, a health expo was held in the large Longfellow gym and was attended by over 15 community organizations.
