“”The smell of spices will fill the halls of Logan Middle School this week as students start their annual pie labs. The goal of the pie labs is for students to bake and supply over 70 pumpkin pies for the La Crosse Community Thanksgiving Dinner held at the La Crosse Center.
Eighth-grade students in Joshua Ison’s Family and Consumer Science class will be mixing and baking pumpkin pies at the end of the week. The pie labs are an organized effort by students and staff of the school to volunteer their time and talent to give back to the local community. Students see the project as one of the many ways to show community pride and as a thank you to those who have supported their school again this year.
“The pie labs are an opportunity for the students to use the skills they have learned over the past quarter,” said Family and Consumer Science teacher Joshua Ison. “This allows them to use those new baking skills to be a part of something bigger than themselves by helping those in our community.”
Logan Middle School students have been baking pies for the La Crosse Community Thanksgiving Dinner for over 25 years. The pie ingredients and supplies are donated by Logan Middle School staff and student families.
“This is amazing and what the dinner is all about,” said vice president of the La Crosse Community Dinner board of directors Daria Lapp. “It’s truly a community event. We have hundreds of volunteers that help the day of and the day before, but we have many helping behind the scenes that no one knows about. There are kids all over the district making pies, cards, and placemats. There are students volunteering with their families to deliver dinners to people in the community. It’s just wonderful that kids are volunteering their time to help with this effort.”
Once the pies have baked and cooled, volunteers from the La Crosse Community Thanksgiving Dinner will pick up and transport them to the La Crosse Center.
