“”To educate the community on the harmful effects of tobacco and advocate for policies to improve the health of the community, students from Logan Middle School spent time cleaning up Copeland Park during Earth Week. The students collected and disposed of discarded cigarette butts and other tobacco litter as part of the ‘Butts Are Litter Too’ Earth Day mini-grant program from the La Crosse Area Health Initiative.
“The program has several goals,” said La Crosse County Health Department project coordinator Morgan Drexler. “We hope to help strengthen partnerships between youth, adults, and community organizations to make positive change. We also want to cultivate an interest among youth for improving the health of their community that will have lasting effects.”
The La Crosse Area Health Initiative awarded ten mini-grants of $100 to area schools and youth groups in La Crosse County as part of their ‘Butts are Litter Too’ campaign. The initiative engages youth in a cigarette butt litter clean up that leads towards environmental and policy change for tobacco-free living.
“Our class made signs and posters to display at school and at area businesses and they put together a video presentation to share with the entire school,” said Logan Middle School teacher Diane Block. “The project helped our students gain advocacy skills to make environmental changes that support healthy living for their families, neighbors, and the community.”””””[vc_gallery type=”flexslider_slide” interval=”0″ images=”11781,11778,11779,11780,11782,11783,11784,11785,11786,11787,11795,11788,11789,11790,11791,11792,11793,11794″ img_size=”625×417″]””
