Logan Middle School students get active with Minutes in Motion

“”Gundersen Health System’s annual community physical activity challenge, Minutes in Motion, kicks off on April 1. The free, six-week physical activity challenge can be done on your own or with a team of your family or co-workers.

“The goal of Minutes in Motion is to be active for 30 minutes each day for six weeks,” said Gundersen Health System wellness education specialist Carrie Zimmerman. “Activities can include anything from walking your dog, gardening, or playing with your kids to jogging, biking, or running. Do something you enjoy. Any activity where you are moving your body counts toward your Minutes in Motion.”

Teachers are also encouraged to register their classrooms.

For the second year, Logan Middle School students in the intellectual disabilities special education classroom are participating in Minutes in Motion. The class is made up of sixth through eighth-grade students with a wide range of abilities. The kids look forward to the activities in the classroom, getting students up and moving while they practice math, spelling, and vocabulary.

The students have regular brain breaks using GoNoodle.com activities and movement breaks with things like taking a walk or flying a kite. The class also works on physical activities with groups of the students going bowling, weekly swimming at Logan High School, yoga at Myrick Park, roller skating at High Rollers, fishing at Pettibone Park, and more. The goal is to find daily activities the students enjoy and lifelong activities with easy accessibility.

“All kids struggle with sitting all day and movement can add to their cognitive and physical growth,” said Logan Middle School special education teacher Diane Block. “When our students move on to the high school, they will have the option to join the Adaptive Sports League so this year, we’ve encouraged our students to join team sports. That has been a huge success. Some of our kids are now a part of cross-country, wrestling, basketball, football, and some looking forward to track and field. We want them to be involved in the community and to be active so we are always looking for new ways to include more movement into our lessons.”

Each week Minutes in Motion participants need to log at least 210 minutes and will then be entered to win one of two $50 gift cards. Last year 3,857 people registered for Minutes in Motion.
