The National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT), in conjunction with the Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers presented Logan High School teacher Tom Kammer with the 2019 Outstanding Biology Teacher Award.
This honor, given annually since 1961, identifies a teacher from each of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, other US Territories and Canada who have made invaluable contributions to the profession and have enhanced the learning of biology to their students. Criteria for the award include teaching ability, experience, innovation, initiative, positive student-teacher interactions, and cooperativeness in the school and community.
Kammer is a biology and Health Science Academy teacher at Logan High School in La Crosse. He received his BS and MS degrees from UW-La Crosse. Tom’s teaching career spans over 36 years all in the La Crosse school district including the last 10 at the La Crosse Health Science Academy.
Kammer began teaching at Logan High School and has taught everything science from introductory biology to AP Biology to Environmental Science to Principals of Engineering. He is currently the lead science teacher at the district’s Health Science Academy and teaches anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and dual enrollment general anatomy and physiology with Western Technical College.
Kammer serves as chair of the science department at Logan High School and contributes to the all-around growth of students by serving as head coach of the boy’s soccer team and the head coach of the girl’s track and field team.
Kammer was awarded at a special presentation given by the National Association of Biology Teachers at its national conference in Chicago. He was also given a year’s complimentary membership in NABT.
The National Association of Biology Teachers and the Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers are extremely proud to recognize the contributions made by Tom.
