“”The Project Lead the Way Digital Electronics and Cisco Networking classes at La Crosse Logan High School partnered with CenturyLink, Industrial Automation, Niebuhr Plumbing, NECAL Corporation, and Trane of La Crosse to design and build a desalination system during the 2017-18 school year. The system has the ability to purify brackish (salt) water into contaminant-free water safe for drinking.
“There are areas in the world where every drop of water matters,” said Logan High School Technology and Engineering teacher Steve Johnston. “Not only did this project provide an authentic learning experience for our students, but it affords them an opportunity to improve the quality of life for others.”
The students designed, programmed, and fabricated a mobile desalination system with the following targeted goals:
- Create an authentic engineering learning experience for the students.
- Design a small/mobile, solar-powered desalination system suitable for use in remote areas where the electricity supply is unreliable or non-existent.
- Outfit the system with an ultraviolet light array to kill microbes in the water and a communication system to monitor and manage the unit.
“It’s really exciting to be a part of building something that can potentially bring a huge positive impact to help people without something as basic as clean water,” said Logan High School senior Paige Treakle. “This class and this project have us working toward something that will affect the world.”
The desalination system was designed and fabricated at Logan High School in the Technology and Engineering Department. CenturyLink, Industrial Automation, Niebuhr Plumbing, NECAL Corporation, and Trane provided materials, technical support, and helped define the parameters of the project.
The project was funded by a grant from the La Crosse Public Education Foundation (Randy and Judy Eddy Fund), which in recent years has supported class projects to build remote-operated underwater and aerial vehicles, a self-driving car, a repetitive work exoskeleton.””””[vc_gallery type=”flexslider_slide” interval=”0″ images=”14170,14165,14169,14166,14168,14167,14171″ img_size=”625×417″]””
