LA CROSSE, Wis., (June 19, 2020) – The number of active cases of COVID-19 in La Crosse is on the rise. The La Crosse County Health Department’s Coronavirus Compass Dashboard is now registering “Severe Risk” for both our region and specifically for the City of La Crosse. The current guidance from the La Crosse County Health Department within Severe Risk is, “No in-person activities, distance learning only” for K-12 schools.
Recognizing the appropriate need for an abundance of caution, matched with safety practices and procedures and the highest quality educational experiences possible, district administration made the decision to delay the start of the 2020 – 2021 academic school year for Hamilton and Northside Elementary Schools until September 1, 2020. This means both schools will follow the traditional school calendar the entire year with all other schools in the School District of La Crosse (2020 – 2021 calendar.) This will only be a one-year calendar adjustment to permit additional systems planning in support of our community’s children returning to school on September 1.
In the meantime, district principals are working on the possibility of additional summer learning opportunities for children, and those opportunities will be communicated by individual school principals very soon. Additionally, the risks associated with COVID-19 could certainly be as intense come September.
District administrators continue to work collaboratively with area school districts to offer a full-time online option for families that may be interested; this option will allow families to maintain enrollment in their district and in their current school. More information will be forthcoming regarding that option in the coming weeks.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to direct any questions, concerns, or needs to their student’s school principal for support and more detailed information.
