LA CROSSE, Wis., (February 17, 2025) – Today, the School District of La Crosse, in partnership with local sustainability advocates, unveils its Climate Action Plan, a bold initiative designed to reduce our environmental impact, create healthier learning spaces, and build a stronger, more resilient future for our students and community.
This plan reflects years of collaboration between district staff, students, and local organizations, including Solar on La Crosse Schools, the Coulee Region Sierra Club, the City of La Crosse, sustainability experts from UW-La Crosse, and more. Together, we are turning commitment into action, ensuring sustainability is woven into how we power our schools, manage resources, and educate future generations.
Schools play a critical role in addressing climate-related challenges by reducing emissions and preparing students with the knowledge and skills to lead in a sustainable future.
Our Climate Action Plan sets clear short-term (2030) and long-term (2050) goals to cut energy use, transition to renewable power, reduce waste, and integrate sustainability into education. By taking action now, we are ensuring healthier schools, lower operating costs, and a better future for La Crosse families.
Key Focus Areas
The plan prioritizes four areas for climate action:
- Buildings & Energy – Expanding solar power, improving efficiency, and reducing fossil fuel use.
- Transportation – Cutting emissions from district vehicles and encouraging sustainable commuting.
- Resource Management – Reducing waste, conserving water, and supporting local food systems.
- Quality of Life – Enhancing indoor air quality, expanding outdoor learning spaces, and strengthening climate education.
This plan is a testament to the leadership and dedication of teachers, students, families, and community partners who have long championed sustainability in La Crosse. Groups like Solar on La Crosse Schools have already helped install solar panels at several schools, and the district’s new Sustainability Committee will guide implementation efforts. By aligning with the City of La Crosse’s Climate Action Plan, we are ensuring our schools play a key role in La Crosse’s broader environmental goals.
The Climate Action Plan sets a long-term vision for net-zero carbon emissions and a 50% reduction in landfill waste by 2050. Progress will be tracked annually, with updates every five years to reflect new technology, funding opportunities, and community input.
This is just the beginning. Together, we can make our schools more efficient, our students more empowered, and our community more sustainable – because in the School District of La Crosse, great things happen every day.
