Bright Future for La Crosse Schools: Referendum Passes

LA CROSSE, Wis., (November 6, 2024) – On Tuesday, November 5, voters in the School District of La Crosse approved the 2024 Elementary Upgrade Referendum to invest in a stronger, brighter future for our children. This $53.5 million commitment helps reshape our district to meet today’s educational needs while preparing for the possibilities ahead. Through this vote, our community has shown a deep dedication to ensuring safe, inspiring, and state-of-the-art spaces where every child can thrive.

“We are profoundly grateful for the community’s trust and support,” said Superintendent Dr. Aaron Engel. “This decision moves us forward on a path to create modern learning environments that reflect our vision for excellence in education. Together, we’re paving the way for opportunities that will serve our students, their families, and our city for generations to come.”

The referendum enables the district to consolidate Emerson and Spence Elementary Schools at a brand-new, centrally located school on the Hogan Administrative Center site, which draws on the inspiration and success of Northside Elementary. Most Hintgen Elementary students, teachers, and staff will join an upgraded State Road Elementary, complete with eight new classrooms and a gym to create a welcoming and robust learning environment for everyone. Additionally, some students from Spence and Hintgen will find a new home at Hamilton Elementary, where they will join a vibrant school community.

“This is a powerful moment for La Crosse,” said Board of Education President Dr. Juan Jimenez. “Our community has come together to prioritize what matters most—our kids. We look forward to building schools that will serve as the foundation for learning, connection, and opportunity for years to come.”

In the coming weeks, we begin in-depth planning for these new and expanded spaces, ensuring that they meet our community’s high standards and reflect our commitment to student success. We will continue to keep families, staff, and residents updated on our progress as we bring these projects to life.

This referendum approval marks the start of a journey. While there is much work ahead, we approach it with confidence, hope, and a shared dedication to what’s best for La Crosse’s children. Thank you, La Crosse, for supporting this vision. Together, we’re building a brighter future, one where our schools are a cornerstone of strength, opportunity, and community for all.
